Barbados’ cannon collection totals some 400 guns, with 26 of which can be seen in front of the Main Guard & Clock Tower looking onto the Garrison Savannah. Others are posted at St Ann's Fort and Charles Fort.
The most famous cannon of the collection is the Commonwealth cannon, which bears the Coat of Arms of Oliver Cromwell. There are only two in the world and the other can be found in the Tower of London.
The National Cannon Collection of Barbados is the world’s rarest collection of 17th & 18th Century English Cannons. These relics represent the island’s military past from the early 1600s to the late 1800s, when Barbados was a base of great significance for the British Military while protecting its colony of islands.
The collection of cannons continues to grow as more guns are found in some of the most peculiar places. In recent years even Spanish and Dutch cannon are surfacing.
The National Ordnance Collection of Barbados was catalogued by Charles Trollope, a British military weapons expert specializing in historic artillery, and Major Michael Hartland (author of ‘The Great Guns of Barbados’), is responsible for the development of the collection.
Take a tour of this ordnance museum and be fascinated by the collection of historic military weaponry.
