JANUARY

January 7th 2017 (Saturday)

THE COLLETON HOUSE, St Peter

Established in the mid 17th century, Colleton House exemplifies Barbados’ rich, tangled and often ironic history. Here you’ll learn about the impact of two remarkable men who owned this beautiful property—the first a slave trader who went on to help found a colony in South Carolina, and the last a remarkable geologist whose antithetical attitudes are celebrated in his extraordinarily diverse art collection, including a carriage house full of rarities from New Guinea. Expect to be astounded.

Directions
Choose your favourite route to Speightstown and then go north along the coast on Highway 1B. After Six Men’s Village, the road swings uphill and to the right. Stay on it and look for our parking signs.

HAPPY TREES, St James

A doyenne among Sandy Lane estates, this magnificent, four bedroom villa is set in beautifully landscaped grounds, shaded by mature—and presumably happy—trees! Renowned architect Totón Sanchez recently redesigned it, employing cutting edge technology to serve comfort and flexibility: things like a slatted roof can change at the touch of a pad! He’s also made it a model of eco-friendliness…and a great place to get ideas.

Directions
From the west coast road (Highway 1), turn inland opposite Sandy Lane Hotel onto Molyneux Road. Turn right on High Ridge Road, then left on West Ridge Road. From Highway 2A, turn to the west (and Sandy Lane) at Bennetts, onto Molyneux Road. Turn left on High Ridge Road, then left on West Ridge Road. Watch for our parking signs.

FEBRUARY

February 4th 2017 (Saturday)
ST MICHAEL'S CATHEDRAL, Bridgetown, St Michael

The first Church of St. Michael on this site was dedicated in 1665, and destroyed in the hurricane of 1780. The replacement, erected in 1789 of coral stone in a simple classical style, was then the largest church this side of the Atlantic. Recently refurbished, the church’s interior is quite stately, with galleries on three sides, fine stained glass windows, sculptures, a ceiling shaped like an upturned boat, and many other interesting features. The organ is one of the best in the West Indies. The choir will sing evensong at 5 pm.

Directions
From Highway 2A, turn inland at the Emancipation Statue roundabout, going down Government Hill to Tweedside Road. At the roundabout go left, and then take your next right onto Constitution Road. Pass Queens Park and turn right towards the Central Bank, where there will be parking. Look for our signs. The Cathedral is between St. Michael’s Row, the Central Bank plaza, and Spry Street..

February 15h 2017
ST ANN'S FORT, NATIONAL ARMOURY & DRILL HALL, THE GARRISON, St. Michael

Along with historic Bridgetown, St. Ann’s Garrison was recently awarded World Heritage status. Wonder why? Today’s tour tells you. Gain entry to the 1707 fort and hear what makes the cannon collection important and unique. Learn what role this outpost played in securing the region for the British Empire. It’s fascinating.

Directions
From Bridgetown, go south on Bay Street to the Garrison and watch for our signs. From the ABC Highway, turn due south at the Garfield Sobers roundabout, come downhill towards Worthing, and turn right at the bottom. About a mile later, look for the bright blue.

NOTE
Open House Begins and Ends Hastings Police Station on your left, then watch for our signs and enter via the Defence Force gate.at 5:30pm

February 22nd 2017
FUSTIC HOUSE, St Lucy

Fustic House is one of the most distinctive and magical of the transformations created on Barbados by the English theatrical designer, Oliver Messel. The new film “A Caribbean Dream,” based on Midsummer Night’s Dream, was shot here, for good reason. Get a preview today and meet the writer/director! Besides the two-part house, there’s a delightful cottage, and the conference/entertainment pavilion. The overall ambience and the little details all merge to create an atmosphere of unparalleled elegance and tranquillity. With 11 acres of park-like grounds, you’ll want to walk a lot.

Directions
Go north on Highway 2A to St. Lucy’s parish church. Take the 90-degree left at the roundabout, so that the church car park is on your immediate right. Stay on that road for about 2 km. As you enter Checker Hall, look for the Fustic Village sign on your left, and for our Open House sign too.

MARCH

March 4th 2017 (Saturday)
MIDDLE EARTH, St Joseph

This enchanting property was designed by Ian Morrison. As its name suggests, it reminds one of a hobbit’s habitation snuggled into a hillside overlooking the Scotland District and replete with curves and passages. No wonder Mick Jagger enjoyed his stay here! Beautifully furnished with antiques and collectibles from around the world, this exquisite home is a veritable treasure box.

Directions
Turn inland off the ABC Highway (2A) towards Hothersal Turning and keep straight. After about 5 km, look for a fork in the road and go left towards Mount Wilton Plantation. Be sure to check Facebook or our website for onward directions and parking information. Middle Earth is next to Flower Forest.

March 8th 2017
STONY HILL, St Philip

When Sandford Plantation was subdivided, the Atwells bought a 5-acre parcel with a quarry and bit of gully and hired renowned architect, Kenneth Gardner, to design their house. The result is a 3-storey fortress in mid-century-meets-tropical style, rising from the stone cavity and accessed by a footbridge. It later turned out to be perfect for an artist and her family: Lilian Sten Nicholson has given it great vibes and an eclectic, international feel to each distinctive space. Her studio and work are explorable today.

Directions
From the ABC Highway (2A) turn inland at the Bussa roundabout by Skymall. Drive on for miles, passing straight through the roundabout at Six Roads until you reach Hilda Skeene school. Turn left there and pass King George V park. After the road takes a sharp right bend, look for the Mapps Development sign and turn right there. Look for Casuarina Close and Open House signs
