Parliament Buildings Museum & Heroes Gallery

The PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS of Barbados house the third oldest Parliament in the Commonwealth after Britain and Bermuda. It was founded in 1639 and the present buildings were completed in 1873.

The WEST WING Building was completed in 1872 and has two stained glass windows on the main stairways featuring a biblical quote from Matthew 22:21… "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's".

This wing also houses a National Heroes Gallery as well as a Museum of Parliament.

To celebrate Barbados’ 40th anniversary of Independence, the West Wing of Parliament was refurbished in November 2006.

The EAST WING
Building was completed in 1873 and features stained glass windows depicting Kings and Queens of old England, as well as the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell in the House of Assembly Chamber.

The smaller Senate Chamber features large framed photos of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to name a few. Past Presidents of the Council and past Speakers of the House of Assembly are also shown in the east wing building.

The Speakers chair intricately-carved was an Independence gift from India.

A statue of Sir William Conrad Reeves greets you at the entrance of the building. He was awarded Knight-hood and position of Chief Justice from 1886-1902, for his proposals on increased educational opportunities and the lowering of the voting age.

The Clock Tower was originally located on the east wing, but within ten years of its construction, began to sink and crack and had to be demolished in 1884. During the rebuilding process, the actual clock was stored at Glendairy Prison, and both the redesigned clock tower and reassembled clock was shifted to the west wing in 1880.

The clock was manufactured and designed by John Moore & Sons of Great Britain in the 1870s. During Tropical Storm Tomas in 2010, the clock was damaged and later refurbished by British clockmaker Andrew Hinks and his colleague Brian Perry of the Smith of Derby Group, England.

The Parliament buildings are not open to the public while Parliament is in session.
