Francia Plantation A regal plantation house situated on a wooded hillside overlooking the picturesque St. George valley, Francia is a recent plantation house having been built in the early part of this century. The name 'Francia' comes from the Portuguese word franc meaning France, as the original owner was a Frenchman who became a successful rancher in Brazil before he met and married a Barbadian.

This attractive family home which gives an excellent glimpse into the lifestyle of bygone days is owned and occupied by descendents of the original owner. Still a working plantation, the grounds are beautifully landscaped with gardens, lawns, orchards and ferneries, which visitors are free to roam.

The house itself is furnished with period furniture, Barbadian antiques, fine pieces of silver and china, Brazilian wood panelling and magnificent fountains and ferneries. Of particular interest is a collection of antique maps that are on display (one dating back to 1522). Outside the house there is a set of original drip stones that were once the standard way of providing cool and filtered drinking water. A designated house of the Barbados National Trust, Francia is a unique blend of European and Caribbean style. Visitors are encouraged to wander around the tropical gardens and shady orchards, and to experience all of the charm and grace Francia has to offer.

Francia Plantation House is NO LONGER OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
It is now the home of 'Providence Elementary School' - A Private School
